Chinese Tone Practice Through Real Place Names

Use Chinese city names like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, Hangzhou, and Chongqing to make tone practice easier to remember.

Tone practice gets easier when tones belong to real places. City names are perfect because they are short, memorable, and culturally useful.

City Tone Anchors

北京 Beijing: běi jīng.
上海 Shanghai: shàng hǎi.
成都 Chengdu: chéng dū.
西安 Xi'an: xī ān.
杭州 Hangzhou: háng zhōu.
重庆 Chongqing: chóng qìng.

Say them slowly, then say them inside short sentences:

我想去北京.
上海很大.
成都的火锅很好吃.
杭州很漂亮.

Why It Works

You are not drilling sound in a vacuum. You are attaching tones to maps, food, memories, and images. That makes recall stronger.

Practice Path

Pick five cities from the City Atlas, say each name ten times, then use each in one sentence.
