Mandarin Tones for Beginners: Four Tones, Tone Pairs, and Tone Sandhi
A practical beginner guide to Mandarin tones: the four tones, neutral tone, tone pairs, third-tone changes, and a daily practice routine.
Mandarin tones are not decoration. They are part of the word.
If you learn ma first and try to add the tone later, pronunciation will always feel like extra work. Learn mā, má, mǎ, and mà as different sound shapes from the beginning.
The Four Mandarin Tones
| Tone | Shape | Example | Meaning | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | first tone | high and level | 妈 mā | mother | | second tone | rising | 麻 má | hemp | | third tone | low or dipping | 马 mǎ | horse | | fourth tone | falling | 骂 mà | scold | | neutral tone | light | 吗 ma | question particle |
Open the Tone Lab while you practice. Your goal is to hear the contour before you overthink the theory.
Why Tone Pairs Matter
Real Mandarin words and sentences contain sequences. Practicing single syllables is useful, but tone pairs teach your voice how to move between contours.
Try:
- 中国 Zhōngguó: first tone + second tone
- 学习 xuéxí: second tone + second tone
- 北京 Běijīng: third tone + first tone
- 上海 Shànghǎi: fourth tone + third tone
- 谢谢 xièxie: fourth tone + neutral tone
Read Chinese tone practice through real place names for more memorable drills.
The Third Tone Is Usually Smaller Than Beginners Expect
Textbooks often draw third tone as a deep dip followed by a rise. In connected speech, it is frequently a low tone without a dramatic final rise.
The full dipping shape is useful for learning the category. Natural speech teaches you when the tone becomes shorter.
Basic Tone Sandhi
Tone sandhi means a tone changes shape because of the tones around it.
The most famous example is 你好:
- written: nǐ hǎo
- commonly pronounced: ní hǎo
When two third tones meet, the first is pronounced more like a second tone.
Another useful example is 不:
- 不 bù is normally fourth tone
- before another fourth tone, it often changes to bú
- 不是 is pronounced bú shì
You do not need to master every tone rule in week one. Notice the patterns and keep listening.
A Ten-Minute Daily Tone Routine
- Warm up with the four ma tones.
- Practice five tone pairs.
- Say five real words.
- Read three short sentences.
- Record one sentence and compare it with audio.

- 请再说一遍。 Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn. Please say it again.
